More Rhetorical Devices

Today we learned about more rhetorical devices. Litotes emphasize a point by using a word opposite of the condition. It is used to weaken a claim and further emphasize something. For example, the classroom was no hoarder's house, which means it was clean. An antithesis uses a contrast in language to bring out a contrast in ideas. It is used to help point out fine distinctions in an issue by presenting them together. A hypophoca is the technique of asking a question, then proceeding to answer it. It is used to introduce a paragraph and a way to anticipate questions or concerns you think your reader might raise.
